Mapping Terror in Zimbabwe: Analysis of Political Violence

The analysis on this page is based on the cases of violence mapped here. The map so far bears witness to a sample of 2168 incidents of political violence. More information on the map, and the data, can be found at this link. The images above depict political violence and intimidation that has occured since the March 29th harmonised elections. The full set of pictures can be viewed in our photo gallery. We recommend you download and read these reports available in our document section for a more comprehensive discussion and interpretation of the political violence currently going on in Zimbabwe.
Cases by Province

This chart summarises, by province, the cases of political violence in our sample mapped here. Provincial maps, showing all constituencies within them, can be viewed on this page.

Breakdown by Perpetrator

Adding the figures for each group appearing in this chart results in a total figure that exceeds the political violence cases in our sample. The chart accommodates the fact that more than one 'perpetrator group' can be involved in a single case of violence.

Breakdown by Violation

Information here is based on victim's testimony. We believe that the figures for those 'displaced' is a gross underestimate: at the time of giving testimony, many will not have known they could not return to the area they have left and may not have described themselves as 'displaced'.
