How to use this constitution resource

Constitution resource logoSokwanele's constitution resource is designed to make it easier for Zimbabweans, and friends of Zimbabwe, to compare different thinking on critical constitutional issues. We encourage you to 'rate the law' by awarding stars, and to leave comments and ask questions.

  1. View by document: Use the menu in the right-hand sidebar to read through an entire document. For example, expose all entries for the law currently in place in Zimbabwe by clicking on 'Zimbabwe Constitution (at 13th Feb, 2009)'.
  2. Browse by section: Focus on a specific section in the constitution, by selecting it from the menu. For example, if you focus on  'Citizenship', the menu will expand to reveal sub-sections within 'Citzenship' offering the opportunity to refine your focus even further. When you click on the option you want, all entries relevant to that section will be filtered out from all the texts. (The number in brackets in the menu tell you how many entries there are at each given point of the filtering process.)
  3. Browse by key phrases: You may not be sure how to find the relevant detail you want. If this is the case, try searching by key phrases - this option is accessed via the tab above. Browse through the long list of phrases and click to view entries.
  4. Use the predictive search tool: Start typing key words in our predictive search function. The system will predict what you want, and match it with the content available on our database. It will then provide you with a set of links and phrases that might be related to what you're looking for, helping you to usefully filter the available material to your search terms. You can find a link to the predictive search tool in the right-hand sidebar.
  5. Compare and contrast: The filtering element of the project calls out the relevant text, from each document, for each section. This allows you to compare and contrast accross different documents. We've used a combination of images and colour to make it clear which piece of law/text belongs to which document. For more information on each document, or to download a copy as a PDF file, please click the tab above labelled 'About the documents'.
  6. Rate the law by awarding stars: Each entry provides the option for our audiences to anonymously give a rating of 1-5. The rating is as follows:
  • 1 Star = 'Rubbish';
  • 2 stars = 'Poor';
  • 3 stars = 'Good';
  • 4 stars = 'Very good'
  • 5 stars = 'Excellent'.

    Only you will know how you voted: you can change your mind, but your vote is only counted once for each entry. As more and more people vote, the rating will change to reflect an average score (and average opinion) for each section of the law.
  1. Comment, question and discuss: Use the comment link alongside each entry to add your thoughts or ask questions. Your comments and questions will help others using this resource to think about the entries in new ways by exposing flaws and highlighting strengths.
  2. Background information: The panel at the bottom of this page contains some background information on the constitutional process, including timeframes, the thematic subcommittees, and the names of some of the people involved.
