Flagrant violation of the rule of law on Mount Carmel farm

We have added captions and background information to this footage, circulated to the media, of Ben Freeth's recent visit to his father-in-law's farm (on Good Friday, 10 April 2009). Shortly after this visit to Mount Carmel, Ben Freeth wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai:

Dear Prime Minister Tsvangirai

As you are aware I wrote an open letter to you 2 weeks ago asking where we were going because "soon it will be too late."

I likened our country’s economy to that of an engine that is continuing to be stripped. Unfortunately the stripping process has increased in momentum significantly since my letter; and police unfortunately remain complicit with it.

ZIG Watch : Issue 2

Charts showing breaches

Zimbabwe Inclusive Government Watch (ZIG Watch) is tracking articles and reports which provide examples of violations of the agreement between Zanu PF and the two Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Formations signed in Harare on 15 September 2008.

A great weight of responsibility rests on the shoulders of Zimbabwe's new Joint-Monitoring Implementation Committee (JOMIC), which began work in Harare on Monday.

JOMIC was set up to ensure that the unity government proceeds according to the Global Political Agreement (GPA) signed by all three political parties on 15 September last year in an effort to resolve the nine-year crisis.

The 12-member committee comprises eight senior Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party members drawn from both formations, and four senior Zanu PF party members.

JOMIC will monitor compliance with, and progress on, items agreed within the GPA.  The panel is tasked with resolving existing and emerging disputes among the parties or government agencies through dialogue.  It will also receive reports and complaints in respect of any issue related to the implementation, enforcement and execution of the agreement.

In cases where it fails, the disputes are to be referred to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU).

Statement by MorganTsvangirai on the Resolutions made by the National Council

“Therefore, in accordance with the party’s constitution, the political agreement we signed on September 15th 2008, and in the best interests of the welfare of all Zimbabweans, the MDC has resolved to form an inclusive government with Zanu PF and MDC-M” - Morgan Tsvangirai

Statement by the Leader of The Movement for Democratic Change, President Morgan Tsvangirai, on the Resolutions of the Party's National Council Meeting at Harvest House, Harare

Today, the MDC's National Council met as we once again find ourselves at an historic crossroads in our decade-long struggle for democracy. Throughout this struggle, the MDC has been guided by the principles of democracy and by the will of the people. This campaign is neither easy nor straightforward and often we have had to change the fronts on which we wage the struggle in response to changing circumstances and conditions.

The MDC was established to bring about change through the ballot box. This we achieved despite overwhelming odds, culminating in our historic victories in the March 29th Parliamentary, Presidential and local government elections.
