New wave of arrests of civic groups (DPA)
The Zimbabwe police are involved in a renewed crackdown on civic organisations and have made several arrests since Sunday. 14 Members of ‘public information groups’ organised by the Media Monitoring Project Zimbabwe have been arrested in Binga and were only given access to lawyers on Tuesday.
Police raided the offices of the Ecunemical Support Services and the Christian Alliance (CA). 15 Staff members of the CA were arrested, one of which is outspoken critic and commentator Pius Wakatama.
Lawyers say that the police are ignoring high court orders issued on Sunday for the immediate release of senior advocate and MDC elected MP Eric Matinenga. Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa said on Tuesday that he was considering amnesty of convicted criminals in the jails to make space for people convicted of political violence.

Brutalised people brutalise others. Mugabe is confused. Strategies used against his alleged vatengesi during the so called armed struggle are still being used on the whole nation now. He still blindly believes that his military solution in Matabeleland worked. Unfortunately it didn’t. Why is there no effective Zanu influence in that region. He must really wonder. The daft JOC and its president don’t realise how much they have hardened this populace. These are the doings of chancers and outdated old men who preach democracy while having no clue what it means. If I hit my wife and kids, I have the physical power FOR THAT MOMENT but boy the sons are growing and will they boot me some day soon. Lastly, to those selfish ‘land owning’ tribesmen called war vets or whatever and the indigenous entreprenures who survive by allegiance to ZANU, amass your wealth and influence but know that it’s at the cost of orther ordinary people’s lives and blood. Poverty and greed can surely make a man sell his soul. ,
