Opportunity Knocks

What an opportunity the situation in Zimbabwe now presents. For the past several years, I have heard from other’s mouth’s , and I must confess my own, that the international community would not intervene to stop the impending crisis in Zimbabwe. “There is no oil, no wealth for them” insinuating that the West is only humanitarian in action, when there is return of investment.
Thus prevails the general consensus, with regard to international (Western) mindset on military intervention. The world stood aside and watched when millions of innocents died in Rwanda, and a tribe was all but decimated. Well, at least we all got to watch a movie made about this tragedy, even if it was only made 10 yrs after the fact…
Oh what an opportunity now presents itself in Zimbabwe. Here is a country, in dire need of help to rid itself from an oppressive regime – where the majority of the people need help in all forms, be it food, water – and to be free of violence in the form of full scale war. The country has nothing to offer – no oil, limited minerals and not much else. The investment needed to free Zimbabwe will almost certainly outweigh any potential return from the desired result. What a beautiful opportunity for western governments, especially the US and UK to make the strongest statement possible – that we as a global community will be willing to act, to free any nation from a perilous, corrupt and viscous government – FOR NO FINCANCIAL GAIN WHATSOVER, other than the humanitarian responsibility we all share as a global village.
Currently China has played a large role in rejecting the UN Security Council’s proposals to act on Zimbabwe, along with Russia and South Africa. We as a global community have a perfect opportunity to make our point known to China with the start of the Olympics just weeks away.
Let us stand together for humanity, peace and a global understanding of the rights of human beings to eat, live and to vote. We in the west take this things too much for granted. Let us now be heard.
Pleas forward this email/letter/msn message to your local MP/Senator/Public representative.
We need to act now.

This is definately Black Sunday for Zimbabwe, I do wish Morgan the very best in what he will do with his future, i would have loved to see him go through to the end of the elections, but i think he has made the right decision. The people of Zimbabwe are suffering, and even if Morgan had carried on in the electrol process, the elections will be rigged by Mugabe, and it would be hard for Morgan to claim his place as president. Morgan should already be president of Zimbabwe. I just hope Zimbabwe can Fight against Mugabe, they need courage and determination, to stand up and fight. Morgan is a decent human being and would be a great Leader of Zimbabwe. Now Morgan has stepped down, its time for the world to interviene and help zimbabwe fight against the guerilla Mugabe.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('246062','Kimberley Roberts'); return false;">Reply to this comment</a> --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('246062','Kimberley Roberts','This is definately Black Sunday for Zimbabwe, I do wish Morgan the very best in what he will do with his future, i would have loved to see him go through to the end of the elections, but i think he has made the right decision.
This is indeed Black Sunday for Zimbabwe, but Morgan Tsvangirai has shown himself to be a great, and yet humble, statesman. Under the circumstances he has made the right decision.

In a country which is controlled by evil, corruption, graft, double-dealing, and sheer theft by a small minority of politicians and officials of Zanu-PF, and who take advantage of their positions to rake in millions of US dollars for themselves, and who do not care one jot for the poor, starving and downtrodden masses of the ordinary people, it was inevitable that they would not surrender meekly and submit to any form of fair democratic election.

But Morgan still has unfinished business. He should use all the power and influence at his disposal to unseat this common enemy of the people. From both inside and outside the country he should persuade the neighbouring countries not to participate in the illegal imports of the many goods which are stolen from Zimbabwe. The MDC should do all they can within Parliament to face up to Zanu-PF, and make a mockery of it calling itself the 'ruling party', and most of all, he must wait and bide his time. For there will be a day of reckoning, a day when he can once again confront the nation, a day when he will no longer need to be running from a force than means him harm, a day of optimism and victory.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('246054','True Grit'); return false;">Reply to this comment</a> --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('246054','True Grit','This is indeed Black Sunday for Zimbabwe, but Morgan Tsvangirai has shown himself to be a great, and yet humble, statesman.
Be strong, people, hold the faith. Trust the leaders; millions are praying for them around the world and it is not true that Zimbabwe is friendless (even though Governments are being slow to take a stand). Even if this is a wrong decision, and some will think so, it is not being made for the wrong reasons but out of love for Zimbabwe's people.

This could on the other hand be the right move. Nana, if you speak to your aunt, please share with her our love and sorrow asa diaspora community for what has happened to her home and family. Our prayers are with her, but also with your uncle because he has allowed fear or greed to destroy love - even love of family - and that is a dire state.

I believe that Zimbabweans will have their vote, with their suffering and their courage they have made it impossible for the world to ignore Zimbabwe any longer. On that day, they will know that their vote will count, and they will live to experience the freedom so dearly bought.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('246034','Anonymous'); return false;">Reply to this comment</a> --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('246034','Anonymous','Be strong, people, hold the faith.
I have to say that I find this decision deeply upsetting. We all know that a free and fair election was impossible. We've always known that. But to give up and hand power back to Mugabe after all that the people of Zimbabwe have suffered is, to me, unthinkable. What now for Zimbabwe? Another six years of Mugabe? Zimbabwe cannot wait six years for change. I doubt it can even wait six months. And what about all those Zimbabweans who were beaten and abused for voting for Tsvangirai, and yet still maintained they'd go and vote for him again in the run-off? How will this decision make them feel? How can we tell them that their suffering was for a good cause if the people we are looking to for salvation from this crisis walk away when the going gets tough? And what can we as the diaspora now do to save Zimbabwe from its inevitable destruction at the hands of these madmen?

I fear I have little hope left, and I am at a complete loss as to what to do now.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('245997','AL'); return false;">Reply to this comment</a> --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('245997','AL','I have to say that I find this decision deeply upsetting.
The world weeps with Zimbabwe (except for China).

I wish there was something I could do. I will write to my senator (who answered my last email on the subject and seems to take some interest in the issue). But that is precious little while people are suffering and dying.

Take courage, be strong, and know that the world stands with you.

Except for China, of course. I hope they enjoy their Olympics. I won't be watching that.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('245995','ginny'); return false;">Reply to this comment</a> --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('245995','ginny','The world weeps with Zimbabwe (except for China). \r\n\r\nI wish there was something I could do.
Hi Sokwanele
I am truly saddened by this news and I do not think that much will change. Mugabe has always been posturing that is is idea of campaigning-it is not pursuasive to the people who count.

Over the past few years I have come to think that not many countries care about Zimbabwe apart from Zimbabweans themselves. Zimbabwe has no oil or some resource attractive enough to force self interested countries to intervene even on a humanitarian pretense. I some times think bleakly like this. This news just makes these thoughts come flooding back.

I am particularly disturbed by this news and I know that many people who have been affected by this violence and who have family members affected by this violence will be too.

Last week I was told by my mother how an uncle of mine had sold out the rest of the family to Zanu-PF in Masvingo. This man is spinless and shames me. He sold out his own relatives people who had protected him and taken care of him all this life. Can you imagine what that feels like? As you can guess my aunts and uncles having been exposed at a public meeting as MDC supporters where attacked. They were forced to flee and my aunt who managed to reach my parents home tells us that she has no idea how everybody else is. She also has no idea if she will have a home to go back to. But bless her heart she said even if they kill me for my vote I shall go back home and vote. Can you imagine considering her own personal suffering what this news will do to her. She believed in democracy enough and was willing to cast her vote even if this cost her life. She was prepared to do it.

I understand the reasons Morgan has made this decision but I think it is a wrong decision. We will not have change. Mugabe does not care about us. China, Russia and South Africa for reasons only known to themselves will not support any meaningful action to restore peace and security to Zimbabwe. I worry that the little hope we had is fading very fast.

Sorry, this news has affected me greatly and I have rambled on.
