Schools closed

All schools are closed. I know of one mother who said her school was told at the very end of Friday last week that the school her child was at had to close and only re-open on Monday next week.

Another mother – whose child is only 8 years old – first knew that her child’s school was meant to be closed when her child arrived back home this morning after walking all the way back. The streets today have been very busy with small primary school children walking home alone after the doors were told to close imediately.

Private schools were apparently given until 1pm today to close – Directive from the Ministry of Education. I was told by one member of staff at a school that they were told it would be considered a hostile gesture if they stayed open.

The ZBC News is repeatedly insisting the elections are still on, and there is some confusion among some people here. Closing the schools does seem to suggest preparation for something.

I was told that in Douglasdale, Matabeleland North, Zanu PF youth militia are going door to door to force people to a Pungwe . Then on the way home I went past a fancy twin cab vehicle loaded to the hilt with Zanu PF T-shirted people: they are a threatening presence all around us.
