G8: leaders ‘agree to call for Zimbabwe sanctions’

Yesterday Silvio Berlusconi was reluctant to push ahead with sanctions against the Zanu PF regime:

The Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, was the least aggressive toward Mbeki, claiming some African countries had warned heavy sanctions would lead to a civil war. “South Africa is pushing for a deal between the president and his opponent, and I agree. Sanctions can have a negative effect,” Berlusconi said. [Link]

He has swung around since then, because today he said:

“The need and the urgency was indicated for sanctions at the UN Security Council,” said Mr Berlusconi, in asides to reporters at the conference.

He said that he had a change of heart when it seemed that “even Russia decided to go ahead, it seemed to me important to join in, voting unanimously”.

British officials later confirmed that they had succeeded in getting “strong language” to back up a call for sanctions. [Link]

I smiled at the “even Russia” remark. I am personally hoping for an arms embargo against Mugabe’s regime. I wonder if “even China” will go along with that call?

I am well informed and witness to the fact that the ZANU ministers etc change the surnames of their relatives and themselves and get passports through bribery. How can that be stopped now and when the new sanctions go through.

    freedom,

Do you happen to have any information about their families’ assumed names, or know where we could find this out? If so, please post it here. Perhaps Sok can put together a letter to send to the G8 leaders and the UN with this information?

If the UN or G8 are abusing section 7 (blah blah blah)Resolution, who is Boniface Chidyausiku to claim abuse. Does he have an idea about the situation in his country where emotional, psychological and physical abuse occur every minute in the name of sustaining zanu.

Remember these people are skilled at crying foul while the stench is coming from their very mouths and homes. What has he to say of the influx of our people in neighbouring countries. To him things are normal and this is not destabilising the region. What a shame!!

Now no amount of spin or legal jargon will sell. It’s time for the dictator to go on his knees and suffer the consequences of his dictatorial practices. As for Mbeki let the world cup be threatened to the point of relocation uswabe ntswebe!

    How disgusting!!

The UN needs to be informed that the travel ban sanction may not be that effective as some of these zanu thugs change their surnames or names altogether.
