Back to the ‘Alpine Crossing’ on behalf of Zimbabweans
A couple of weeks ago, some of my friends were discussing the food crisis facing poverty stricken Zimbabweans and wondering what on earth could be done be ordinary people on the ground while Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF refuse to allow AID organisations to feed the starving.
One of the people commented that small parcels of US$50 could be posted in from people outside the country. US$50 worth of groceries might make a difference to one person’s life but it won’t help large families and it certainly won’t help a nation of starving people.
The point I want to make, is that the situation is so appalling, that in a desperate way to find anything to do that might help, even a little, parcels valued to US$50 were mentioned.
In the spirit of that, I’d like to point you to the small fundraising widget in our sidebar.
Thomas Otter is cycling through the Alps and I think his trip starts in a few days time – on the 25 August. He has turned his excursion with friends into a fundraising venture for Zimbabweans, with all the funds going to a registered charity. So far he has raised £1080,00. This is about US$2,008.67 – much more than a US$50 parcel.
Not bad for one guy on a bicycle who wants to help out!
If anyone would like to lend support to him and his efforts, please securely donate here.
His latest post on his blog outlines his soundtrack for the big climbs, and he needs a few more tunes. Why not head over there and suggest a few more songs that will spur him on and keep Zimbabwe in his mind (note the first tune he has chosen). Day 6 of his trip involves “154kms and 4325 meters of climbing”. Reaching for a credit card (if you have one) hurts a lot less than that, so please donate. Here is his song list:

I have put the widget on my blog. I also did a post linking the ZBF appeal – had an email from someone saying they had donated £100 so it DOES work if you help spread the word.
