The People are Finding Their Voices
June 11th, 2005
Although details are sketchy, one of my good friends confirmed an incident that occurred outside the old Police Drill Hall in Bulawayo this morning. My neighbour was nearby and heard shouting and screaming coming from the direction of the Drill Hall at about 9:30. Onlookers rushed to see what was happening, when all hell broke loose. There were people running all directions screaming, with the riot police (turned-thieves) in hot pursuit. Naturally everybody did the smart thing and made themselves scarce. That was the end of a seemingly minor incident.
NOT SO! My friend explained that the police (turned-thieves) had set up another auction to sell off the goods stolen from innocent informal traders on the streets of Bulawayo (those items that they had decided not to steal for themselves). A sizeable crowd has gathered – those without consciences had turned up to bid for the (stolen) livelihoods of the poorest of Zimbabweans for a pittance.
However, amongst the crowd were a number of daring individuals who were determined to register their protest against the barbaric and senseless daylight robbery of the least fortunate, currently being conducted diligently and daily by mugabe’s police (turned-thieves).
As the bidding started, they started abusing the police verbally, demanding to know how they could steal from the people – they who were sworn to protect them? How could they take away the people’s goods and money – all that they had to feed and shelter their children and themselves? This quickly turned a morning’s work into a brief nightmare for the police (turned-thieves) who were on duty.
Predictably, this did not last long – the riot police (turned-thieves) were close by and quickly moved in to brutalise those who had dared to make them think about their inhumane actions.
Although this is – to all appearances – a minor incident, and not a major story in itself, there is one major thing that makes it stand out in the sorry history of “operation marabatsvina” – the people have found their voices!
To those brave souls who risked life and limb this morning to register their protest we salute you! God bless you! We are with you! Remember this day and tell everyone about it! Grow strength from it!
To the police (turned-thieves) we would remind you of your duty to the people who you are abusing, and warn you – THE PEOPLE HAVE FOUND THEIR VOICES !
