1/4 Zimbabwe’s city schools are still closed

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition is gravely concerned with the ever deteriorating education system in Zimbabwe. Almost a quarter of city schools are still closed since schools opened on Tuesday the 2nd of September 2008 because teachers are on strike and most students cannot afford the exorbitant school fees.

Reports from the Secretary General of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), Raymond Majongwe, state that more than 70% of teachers have not reported for duty whilst many others have left the profession for greener pastures, particularly, in South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.
