Possible deaths during ‘Operation Drive Out Trash’

June 5th, 2005

Sokwanele has received unconfirmed reports from our activists on the ground in Victoria Falls, that a young child was burnt to death in his bed (Monday, 30 May 2005), as the police in an act of unimaginable cruelty, set fire to houses. We are trying to confirm this report.

Activists report that in Victoria Falls, the nightmare started at 4am in the morning. “There were people screaming in fear, and children stood by dazed as parents fought to save a few belongings before fleeing. There was smoke and fire everywhere”.

Earlier this week in Mutare a two year old baby died as a result of exposure. Estimated figures now state that two million innocent civilians have been left homeless during the beginning of the cold winter season.
