White clouds (with dark linings?)

September 24th, 2008

This morning I woke up determined not to let the “situation” get me down, but then I made the fatal error of listening to the ZBC news. The top story was that the Red Cross is busy delivering food aid to the most vulnerable.

Thank goodness, I sighed in relief, but a relief clouded by the knowledge that the farcical agreement has given the wily old dictator exactly the legitimacy he has been looking for as he swans about the world, having the temerity to attend the UN summit dedicated to African issues.

Aid agencies are now plugging the devastation brought on by haphazard and violent farm invasions (which are still taking place) and total agrarian ineptitude.

The news report then plunged me into dark anger, as the reporter stated confidently that Red Cross are having to do this because of food shortages brought on by drought, global warming and western backed sanctions.

The GNU agreement is very vague on the concept of media freedom – really it’s about time that democratic forces staged a coup at our public broadcasters and newspapers. Thank goodness I don’t carry a gun, for I would have been sorely tempted to race over to the radio station and shoot up all the broadcasting equipment. I do have a mallet though … there’s a thought …

Later on in the morning I was told the reason that Red Cross are being touted as the great saviour is because it is largely controlled by ZPF.  I am yet to scan the internet for evidence about this, but it came from a highly reputable source. I am told that Red Cross International funds the local chapter which is manned by ZPF stalwarts.

I thought the Red Cross was meant to be neutral and totally non partisan. I thought this was critical to their activities around the world?

So you cyber activists out there, can you advise if this is true?

Is this another time when we all need to lobby the international community to ensure that the already highly politicised distribution of food is controlled by impartiality and accountability? We cannot allow the international community, through the best of intentions, to prop up the regime any longer.

If this is a fact that ZANU is still in charge of food for the starving, well what was this agreement all about ? Where is a new impartial negotiator with guts to sort out this once and for all, for the people who really needs a new life now.

Allegations of ZANU-PF take over of Zimbabwe Red Cross have appeared from time to time: (reference are to ZimbabweSituation archive .html files) for example
    New Zimbabwe reports sep5_2006, sep20_2006
    FinGaz report feb2_2007
    The Zimbabwean report mar1a_2007
but there are many reports of normal aid-giving activity by Red Cross groups.
So I don’t have the information to assess the current status of the leadership of the Red Cross in Zimbabwe and whether they are in (some faction of) ZANU-PF’s pocket. Certainly there were allegations, apparently serious and factually based ones. Maybe they were answered satisfactorily? – I don’t know.
