Just Another statistic?
July 6th, 2005
My friend Million called me this morning to say he wanted to meet with me. That is not a good way to start a day, as that usually means he has bad news to pass on – today was no exception.
He wanted to tell me of an old woman who had been evicted from her home by mugabe’s thugs as part of the current “operation murambatsvina”, and her humble shack reduced to a pile of rubble.
Carrying what little of her worldly possessions that she could manage, she went off in search of shelter from the winter cold. Tragically, no-one informed her that there are numerous churches in Bulawayo who have responded to God’s call to help these refugees from mugabe’s latest fascist excess.
Thinking that she had no family or friends to turn to, she curled up under a tree to try and sleep. Sadly the night before last was one of the coldest winter nights in Zimbabwe this year.
Passers by found her early the next morning, and someone ran to call Million. He arrived just too late – she had died some minutes before. Another tragic death in a tragic situation.
But what is she to zanupf? What is her death to mugabe? Is she even a statistic?
Somehow I doubt it – zanupf are very poor at that sort of record-keeping. But mugabe beware! zanupf beware! The people are keeping record of your actions! Every life is precious to us, and we will see justice done!
