I think more than 50% will need food-aid next year
BBC gave a report last week from a UN official that by January next year 50% of the population would need food-aid in order to survive in this land.
I honestly feel after talking with people I come into contact with on a daily basis that this report is grossly under-estimating the situation, and that more than 50% need food aid at present.
I also feel come January that that figure will be far higher, maybe as high as 95% with the current inflation rate and the, in many instances, unrealistic incomes that people are getting.
Food as a daily item is fast becoming a pipe-dream that the average Zimbabwean cannot afford.
It is therefore high time that the UN and other agencies involved in this country become more realistic as to what is happening on the ground as the Zanu PF party is once again, as reported in a independent publication, using food as a political weapon to cow people into submission.
It is further observed that medical care for emergencies is virtually unobtainable unless one comes in with cash in sufficient quantities, or manages to whip a bank-certified cheque for the right amount out of one’s sleeve. The moral of this is – do not have an accident or become ill in Zimbabwe as medication and medical care are fast running out.
Poverty in Zim comes disguised in many ways at present and it does not only affect the rural or urban-poor any longer, but is covering a larger and larger proportion of the population as the days go on in this land.
As a matter of fact, if nothing happens soon it could develop in to a Somalia/Ethiopia kind of situation in the near future.
