Struggling for maize in the rural areas

October 15th, 2008

This is what happened to villagers in one rural community who were struggling to make a plan to survive amidst extreme hunger and food shortages.

They clubbed together to send a scotch cart to central GMB (Grain Marketing Board) to collect maize.  Around 100 carts had already gathered at the GMB waiting for maize and they all waited all day.

Finally the maize came. The price was $20,000 for 20kg.

The villagers who had shared all their money to buy food could not pay that amount, so they used collective money to buy one bag of maize between them.

In the end, each family got 2kg mealie meal.

That’s enough food for one day.
