The shocking price of groceries in Zimbabwe
October 5th, 2005
If you had any doubts about the average Zimbabwean’s daily struggle with inflation, just have a look at last week’s print edition of The Zimbabwean (The Zimbabwean is available online here). Reproduced below is their shopping basket, illustrating price increases between 14 August and 23 September this year – a period of just over 5 weeks. I’ve gone one step further and added a column showing the percentage price increase.
Please note that there has been a 53% increase in the price of 1kg of potatoes – potatoes being the vegetable that there is apparently plenty of and which mugabe says we should all eat! Move over Marie Antionette!
