Cholera in Zimbabwe – latest figures up until 25 January 2009
January 26th, 2009
This graph (click to enlarge), based on data circulated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), shows cholera cases and deaths up until 25 January 2009. The increases in both are climbing daily.
For example, on the 23 January, 1368 new cases were added and 59 deaths were recorded. A day later, on the 24th, a further 1906 cases of cholera were added along with 21 more deaths. On the 25th, 655 new cases were added with an additional 26 deaths. Far from improving, the cholera crisis is still spreading and growing.
On the 25th, a cumulative 53,306 cases of cholera in Zimbabwe had been recorded, resulting in 2872 deaths.
Most alarming, this graph and the data it reflects, is likely to underestimate the real scale of the crisis in that it will not include those people who died before they were able to access medical care.

This is a frightening representation of what is happening in Zimbabwe – the graph vividly shows us how this is worsening.
I have 2 suggestions:
1. It would be useful to know when it ws on the time line when the dear leader said in December that there was “no cholera” or words to that effect.
2. It would be useful to know how many people have been killed in Gaza and Israel during the same period – I am sure that far more people have died of cholera in Zimbabwe – whilst what is happening in Gaza nd Israel is terrible the response of the world is completely out of proportion to the number of people dying. The world’s response to the tragedy in Gaza is valid but it should be matched by a similar outcry and response to what is happening in Zimbabwe. When are we going to see people demonstrating in London as they have done regarding Gaza about all the innocent people who have died as a result of this brutal regime’s callous disregard for the lives of its people.
