Zanu PF loyalists seizing a last chance for violence and theft…?

February 3rd, 2009

Yesterday we received an email from a concerned person in Germany who had spoken directly to the wife of someone in Harare:

I want to inform you that my friend [name supplied] living at [full address supplied] Chitungwiza with his wife and 4 weeks old baby was assaulted until he passed out by seven men of the secret police on Saturday, 31.01.2009, at 1 a. m. in his house, and afterwards abducted to an unknown place. His wife informed me and I informed the MDC twice and the chairperson of the court for justice at the AU.

We’ve passed this information on to various people. But this email underscores other word of mouth reports we’re getting about people in Harare being visited and beaten. There is a real fear that this is a last ditch onslaught against the MDC and pro-democracy activists by frightened regime loyalists.

We’re also hearing unconfirmed reports that farms north of Borrowdale are being threatened with takeover. It is believed that this is part of a plan to seize 50 farms before the 11 February – a last chance (Zanu PF believe) to grab what they can before the MDC is formally a part of the government.

The fact that Zanu PF loyalists believe they need to steal what they can before the 11th February provides an interesting insight into how they think things may change after 11th February.

As soon as Morgan is sworn in as Prime Minister he should make it one of his first public tasks to fight the intimidation and thuggery of so-called ‘regime loyalists’. He should put down a challenge to Zanu-PF parliamentarians to end the beatings and stealing of property. He should highlight all the criminality that has passed under their auspices, and he should insist the they clean up their act, or label them nothing more than common hyenas. How can people live their lives in peace with this going on?
