Jestina Mukoko and a few others released on bail

March 2nd, 2009

Jestina MukokoThe BBC is reporting that Jestina Mukoko has been released on bail, but she remains in hospital where she still needs ongoing medical treatment. Mukoko was in detention for 89 days before being released on bail. When she was first abducted she was missing for 20 days, when no one knew whether she was dead or alive. The world later learned that she had been severely tortured while in police custody.

In addition to Jestina, reports are that four other activists were also released on bail today – we don’t know who they are yet,  and will provide updates as soon as we have their names.

Fidelis Chiramba and Broderick Takawira were released on bail on the weekend after eight MDC activists had been granted bail – reported here in ZimOnline.

It’s unclear whether Mukoko plus the other four released today are part of that group of eight or not.

Roy Bennett is still in jail; so are at least another eleven activists. In addition to these twelve people, seven MDC activists are still unaccounted for and listed as missing. They are:

Gwenzi Kahiya
Ephraim Mabeka
Lovemore Machokoto
Charles Muza
Edmore Vangirayi
Peter Munyanyi
Graham Matehwa
