Zimbabwe Business Watch : Week 11
March 10th, 2009
While some in the community are heralding the beginning of significant changes to their lives, those in the business sector are still to reach the depths of the economic decline. This is the continuing legacy of the ill fated policies of Dr Gono who drove his agenda through the need for political survival at all costs.
Some of the price of this policy is now being paid by manufacturers in particular as they struggle to find the forex to sustain their operations even at the pitiful levels of late.
It seems that business is cyclic and many cite cash flow as the key obstacle to translating orders into profit earning transactions. However, locally produced goods are finding it a little easier to compete with imports and the efforts of the new Minister of Finance have alleviated the intimidatory pressure the authorities had imposed on those shouldering management responsibilities, people who, not long ago, risked jail sentences for the most minor of transgressions.
