Demise of the railways

Train - Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

I am an ex-railwayman and very proud of it. However, it is distressing me greatly to see the demise of this once great organisation, the pride of Central and Southern Africa, through corruption, nepotism and mismanagement.

In my days, over 40 trains per day would leave and depart from Mpopoma Goods Yards in Bulawayo and that did not include those trains that came into the main Station or went on the Victoria Falls line. Now only 10 trains a day leave Bulawayo on all lines.

Then 4 trains a day of 40 large wagons (80 mt) each would leave Zisco Iron and Stell Works loaded with Steel Billets for export.

Then production was over a million tonnes per annum and now it is less than 100 000 mt. Now the safety standards are largely ignored and that is why there are so many crashes these days.
