Only 871 out of 1000 Zimbabwean children will live to see the age of 5

I saw a frightening statistic on ZWNews, which was taken from the World Health Organisation (WHO) report.

It said that Zimbabwe’s child mortality rate – the number of children per thousand who will die before reaching the age of 5 – is 129 (out of interest, the corresponding rate for the US is 8 children dying, and for the UK is 6 children dying).

Those statistics are for 2004, and things have no doubt got worse since then. By contrast, in 1985 the rate was only 59 deaths per 1000.

In human terms, that means that for every 1000 children born in Zimbabwe, only 871 will make it to their fifth birthday.
