Don,

Have a look at the "Original" constitution before all the nonsense changes - it also had what you are talking about in terms of checks and balances - it is not that the checks were not in place, it is that people went and changed whatever they didnt like once they had a majority vote. Even if we put in the US/India constitution in its entirety - that will not address the fact that the people on the ground do not have the right mentality to step down when its time and will do anything in their power - legally or otherwise, to hang on.
Reply to this comment --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('274730','Sceptical Sue','Don,\r\n\r\nHave a look at the \"Original\" constitution before all the nonsense changes - it also had what you are talking about in terms of checks and balances - it is not that the checks were not in place, it is that people went and changed whatever they didnt like once they had a majority vote.
Perhaps you could include some information about the US constitution, as this seems to work very well and has withstood the test of time and the constant attempts of the greedy to undermine it. In particular, the concept of checks and balances, to ensure that no person or office has absolute power.

Note how much less powerful Obama is than Mugabe. This is what made it possible for them to remove Nixon from office, with no violence.

It is also important to separate the constitution from particular laws. For example, universal free primary education is a subject for a law, not for a constitution. The constitution determines how such laws are passed.

There is no point in discussing the UK constitution, as there isn't one. But India has a written one which is worth looking at. Look mat the countries which function well.
Reply to this comment --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('274697','Don Cox','Perhaps you could include some information about the US constitution, as this seems to work very well and has withstood the test of time and the constant attempts of the greedy to undermine it.
