Zimbabwe’s bright sparks are leaving ZESA

This sent to us by email. ZESA is the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority. ESKOM is South Africa’s electricity supply company.

I’m a technician with ZESA based in Harare and as young people we sit around out on jobs at tea time or whenever we have breaks and discuss the situation in Zimbabwe.

Many of the people are leaving ZESA as they are very worried about the future, as we know that the organisation is collapsing. We see it every day in our work in what we see and what we hear. Many of the guys have gone to South Africa and Botswana, and those of us that are still in the job end up being overworked and also underpaid.

The bosses cannot afford to pay the retrenchment packages so what they do is place job vacancies with Eskom on our notice board hoping that we will apply and get the jobs and therefore resign. This costs the company very little as it is only leave pay and a few benefits.

It is amazing that we see these job adverts on our notice board and even more amazing that it is the bosses who put them there.

If we go into South Africa and get a job with Eskom we are better paid because it is Rand and we can send money home to help our families who cannot the survive the harsh economic environment.

The only problem is that it is lonely down South and we miss our families and try and come home whenever we can.

We know that things will only get worse until we have change in Zimbabwe and this will only come about when we kick out Zanu PF.
