‘Gukurahundi Remembered’ – a BBC interview with Reverend Mufaro Hove

We received an email yesterday from a BBC producer saying,

I’d just like to let you know your newsletter alerted me to the book Gukurahundi in Zimbabwe. As a result of speaking to the publisher and looking for people to talk about their own Gukurahundi experience, this is now the lead story on our program … and will be heard by about 45 million people worldwide.

You can hear it on the web for the next week at the address:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/outlook/index.shtml,

starting tomorrow.

The audio file features an interview with Reverend Mufaro Hove – people who read about Zimbabwe via blogs will probably have encountered Reverend Hove’s own blog ZIMFINALPUSH, which is an extraordinary one man mission of an effort to publicise everything he can about the Mugabe regime.

I learned something new about Reverend Hove, namely, his involvement with the Gukurahundi. This from the BBC World Service Outlook page:

In 1980’s Zimbabwe, Reverend Mufaro Hove, a Zanu-PF official, witnessed and supervised what became known as ‘gukurahundi’. This was a brutal campaign against opponents of the regime of Robert Mugabe in south west Zimbabwe, particularly Matabeleland. Ten years ago, a report called ‘Breaking the Silence’ revealed some of the atrocities which were committed, and on the report’s tenth anniversary, it’s been released in book form. Reverend Hove, now in exile, tells Outlook about his own part in gukurahundi, and the change of heart which has made him determined to tell the world about those events.

I haven’t yet been able to listen to the interview, but I’ve been told that Reverend Hove really speaks out and describes it from an insider (Zanu PF) perspective. I salute his bravery.
