Joke in the face of misery
How do Zimbabweans find it possible to joke when things are this tough - their spirit never ceases to amaze me?
Three stores were visited in the rural areas by an activist friend of mine to assess the situation there, and it was a very depressing sight: none of them had anything to sell in the shops. The people here are struggling.
One of the storekeepers managed to crack a joke: he announced that the only edible thing on the shelves was bolts!
My friend told me this because both he and the storekeeper fell over laughing when he said it. But I wanted to cry.

You can’t expect who constantly wake up to government surprises of some of the most absurd things ever to all be mourning. ZImbabwean people are naturally jovial people and we will not let our current situation break our spirits
