Stuck in the rural areas

A friend of mine who owns his own business is trying to deal with a massive staffing predicament.

This week is the week his and many other businesses opened after the Christmas break. Before his business shut down last year, his staff each received Z$40 million for their Christmas pay.He said the average price of their bus tickets home to the rural areas was Z$10 million.

Inflation pushed the price up to Z$30 million while they were away, with the result that most of his staff can’t afford the bus fare back to return to work. He is trying to run his business with one seventh of his staff stranded in the rural areas. He has no idea how they’ll get back. What choices are his staff supposed to make? Food for the month, or transport back to work?
