Election adverts - ZESN

ZESN advert for the 2008 elections The sense an election is in the air is certainly magnified by the presence of election related adverts appearing in the press.

We’ve scanned in a whole range - some excellent - from this week’s Zimbabwe Independent, and I’ll upload them over the next couple of days.

Today’s offering is the ZESN advert (ZESN being the Zimbabwe Election Support Network).

An article in The Zimbabwean told us that

President Robert Mugabe’s spokesman George Charamba has ordered the State-broadcaster ZBC to pull off air voter education adverts by the Zimbabwe Election Support Network, ZESN.

[...]

ZESN chair Noel Kututwa confirmed the development and said the State broadcaster was preparing to give the independent poll monitoring group a refund, although no formal communication has been noted.

The directive comes hardly a week after the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) stopped ZESN for conducting voter education, stating that under the Electoral Act, only ZEC was mandated to carry out voter education.

Voter education is bad for democracy isn’t it? That’s why they’d ban them….?

Truth is, all the government is trying to do is censor freedom.
