Gerrymandering in Masvingo, Zimbabwe

A map showing gerrymandering in Masvingo, Zimbabwe

This image accompanied our latest issue of Zimbabwe Election Watch (Issue 20). Sokwanele has been monitoring the government’s compliance with SADC Standards for free and fair elections in Zimbabwe since July 2007. We have built up a database of events and statements which clearly mock the region’s principles.

This map is another example of the Zimbabwean government’s unsubtle attempt to manipulate electoral results.

In 2000, Masvingo consisted of 14 constituencies (shown here in colour). In 2008, the region has been hacked into an absurd 26 constituencies, an increase of 12 new constituencies.

Please visit this article on our website to view this map in a larger size, and please keep visiting our website because we plan to add more maps of other regions in the country that will show that Zanu-PF gerrymandering has not been restricted to one region only.

If you honestly think that gerrymandering is bad, you should get introduced to American election maps.
