The next twenty constituencies (ZEC), plus a statement from Morgan Tsvangirai

In a Press Conference held earlier this evening, Morgan Tsvangirai made this statement:
The challenge of giving birth to a new Zimbabwe founded on restoration and not on retribution; on equality and not discrimination; on love, not war; on tolerance, not hate.
After Saturday 29th of March 2008, Zimbabwe will never be the same again; the people have spoken with one voice.
I would like to thank the millions who came to reclaim their dignity and invest in the change they can trust.
I’d like to thank the thousands in every corner of our country who braved the cold to come and make a statement on Saturday 29th March: from the mothers in Bikita, grandfathers in Tsholotsho, widows in Mpopoma, sisters in Kwekwe, school teachers in Zhombe.
In those minutes inside the polling booth, each one of us re-wrote the history of Zimbabwe. For that particular moment we each held the destiny of our country in the pen we used to cast that vote.
The votes cast on Saturday was for change and a new beginning. It was a vote for jobs; it was a vote for food, for dignity, for respect, for decency and equality, for tolerance, for love, and for trust.
Our people, therefore, cannot wait for the execution of that mandate.
I know that in moments such as this there is a temptation to short-cut processes, and to resort to opportunistic pathways. We will exercise restraint, and leadership, as we have exercised over the years.
Indeed, for years we have refused to resort to violent and unconstitutional methods of achieving democratic change.
Against great seduction and temptation, we refuse to be swayed away from the paths of democracy and social justice. That commitment to those values will not be betrayed now.
However, I have to urge the electoral authority that is the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, to proceed with haste, and I think two and a half days is not haste at all!
We, on our part, will tomorrow disclose the totals from our count based on published returns at polling stations. And will after that result make a comment.
Thank you.
A total of 161 constituencies have now been formally declared by the ZEC. Zanu PF are still leading by two seats (with a total of 79) and the MDC Tsvangirai are still behind with 2 seats (77 in total so far). No change for MDC Mutambara who have 5 seats.

Obviously at some point the ZEC will run out of Zanu-pf Seats to play the balancing point with…right? And where is that point likely to be?Any math guru around here?

I thought that was a good speech by MT(even if he did declare them the 2009 elections). The will of the people WILL prevail. The next 24 hours will seem like eternity!

That is a presidential statement. More than ever the maturity and confidence in Morgan’s voice on delivering this statement put him on the forefront of a new Zimbabwe. May God guide you to continue on this path as you lead us into the future

A great speech from our president. The next day is going to feel like and eternity! Can anyone tell me, have the MDC noticed irregularities in the results already announced by the ZEC, and if so - which ones?

Bonsoir,
I’m sitting at home a bit bleary eyed after some intense days in France.
The phones works, but Sarkozy, probably a bit desparate (and I mean desparate) attempts vote buying,
he has made sure that the electricity supply has been stable during the vote….
So, I’ve got lights.
Water, meanwhile is still a problem.
In Toulon, east of Marseille, the water is sold by Veolia ( Rape’ya ).
I read on the net (bbc)) an article “Should the water supply be privatised in Zimbabwe?”
Be very careful people of Zimz… do not let the bush and co. sell your soil, water and souls.
I struggle to live… I earn 1500 Euros (+-) a month, how much is that in Zimz?
[This took me a long time to calculate, so maybe getting rid of bob… and george… can take a long time… sometimes…]
(Z$ 7,040,000,000)… amai… I’m a trillionaire… but always in debt ,-(
So I hope one day the long coated boys will be of the past and the people will be proud and hard working to create their lives to share with their children in pride. (And that the ” thought police will not carry me away tomorrow ” (yes this exists here too ! [ god save my soul ]
In France it’s like bob has just arrived and I’m still bleary eyed since 12 months now… Like horror… Bob in sexy france !
My god… Morgan, do your job well, let the world see where humanity comes from.
It’s late and as many I’ve been distracted from earning my bread !
This morning the students manifested in town here in Toulon, France. Sarkozy and his govt. will reduce spending in education but wants to send more troops to Afganistan, to fight the yankee war of stealing and selling H. to the poor and wanting westerners and anyone else looking for gold powder or gun powder or like the columbian story and planes going to and from to pick up one sick and helpless prisoner, held by terrorists. Then the plane comes home. Any transit, uncontrolled between these destinations is suspect and should be visually recorded and open to the “citizen”.
Mixed thoughts are mine.
We must be un-afraid (sans peur) and face these vandals and bandits who are prepared to call resistants terrorists… yes. The call of all these elections are for the interest of the people … however the people are always taken for a ride… so we must not wait for tomorrow.
Smile and believe.
Zimbabwe and the world, poor world… will live… even if we, so selfish and stupid people, mostly the people of the west, who claim their intelligence and greater capacity of knowledge, insist and continue in their path, the life as we know it will change and be of great change and suffering for all people on this earth.
But we are still here and while we are there is still hope… unless my stupidity overcomes my human instincts.
Long live Zimbabwe, long Africa.
Courage et meilleurs voeux de France,
D J

Praying for you in Texas, USA. God bless you all.

That twat from France (DJ) above should stop boozing and posting blogs and bitching about earning 1500 euros a month. Most people in Zim would die for that kind of money… What a load of nonsense. Either way Morgan is in and Mugabe is out! As a fellow Zimbabwean I cannot express my relief and happiness at this (now probable) outcome. I mean come on.It has happened… Hasn’t it?
I agree with the other fellow above. Morgan made a very dignified and presidential speech. Times they are a changin and there is a long way to go but, with Zimbabwe being so rock-bottom all it can do is go up! Pamberi ne Zimbabwe!
April 2nd, 2008 02:24
it’s actually looking tight. I suggest there may be only 9-10 Zpf seats left giving a tally of MDC 105, ZPF 95, Mutambara 8, Ind 1 (Jonathan Moyo)…but 5 here and there and we’re 100-100. Fancy if Jonathan Moyo held the balance in the end! Looking at pvt vs zec there appears some ZPF chicanery in Chivu South and Magunje…has the rigging started?

Thanks for your post.
The final results are not in yet by any means, but we would really welcome the end of the useless Mugabe regime which has brought so much suffering to the people of Zimbabwe.

Thanks to all Zimbabweans for expressing your wishes in peace and calm. You refused to be intimated. One of Macheso’s latest song has the phrase “Zizi harina nyanga” (the owl has no horns, its just its ears), this confirms something about the ZANU PF thieves that has been milking the economy for thei personal gain. i read Morgan’s speech with joy! What a promising statesman of a future Zimbabwe. We do not old and the so-called educated man to rule a country. Just a humane human being will manage it especially with the support of experts - not chosen on partisan line. Gushungo ndipo pavakairasa, and if you do that, do not fool yourself by thinking that the people are fools. they give you a long rope to hang yourself. Mugabe is a lesson to all future leaders.
long live Zimbabwe! we are in a new era where the future depends on hardworking public officials not on war credentials that are abused for personal gain. you milked the cow until it collapsed, let it be cared for by concerned herdmen and women and responsible citizens who would allow it to recover for the better of us all.

All this waiting is so frustrating, although we have waited so long for change. I hope there will be some more official news tomorrow. This is so much better than the last elections though, where Zanu claimed victory and we all accepted it. I think they are going to have a very hard time covering up any rigging that they may be doing!
April 2nd, 2008 08:56
Zanu Pf and ZEC Pf should stop tempering with the election results and release them as they are. Yes Mugabes government has trampled on our basic human rights and freedoms and now that has come to pass. Let no one belittle our votes and rob us of our victory. We the people have spoken through the ballot box, the voice of the people is the voice of God almighty, whoevver demeans the victory of the people let him do it at his own peril…FREE ZIMBABWE!!!!!

This was no election, it is a referendum for Bob to quit or not. He will quit “not too long from now” he has no option. lets be careful now - he is not the problem any longer, the problem is his cronny army generals to accept as Bob has already done. Soon the sun will rise high the bluest skies of the world and the soft breeze on the lift high our girls’ skirts again as we laugh and smile again at the Zimbabwean beaty!! Keep praying just a moment longer.
