My 71 year old grandfather is now a king. He can no longer go to work as we are now taking care of him. Seated at our rural home he now enjoys the benefits of bearing us. Everyone in the family sends him a monthly parcel of goodies, including food and medication. He is an elder and it is his honourable position in our family that drives our respect.
At our rural home he is not allowed to take domestic animals to the grazing fields, his job is to rest and enjoy his old age. He is proud to be old. The young people in village enjoy calling him “Sekuru” (old man) but this is not the case with President Robert Mugabe, a man who is 18 years older than my granddad.
Many people have been thrown into jail by merely mentioning that Mugabe is old, and it is even worse if someone dares to call for the old man’s resignation. But the reality is Mugabe is old. He should resign and take his pension. It is high time the octogenarian should be given an exit package and rest.
I am surprised by his party’s position of endorsing him as their presidential candidate in the next election which is due next year .
Mugabe will be 89 in 2013 and his party still wants him to stand?
What is wrong with Zanu PF? Are they saying there is no one competent enough to replace Mugabe? Are there no other candidates with the courage to challenge Mugabe? Why are they afraid of coming out in the open?
We hear Mugabe talking of the existence of factions in his party, but we have never seen one person coming out in the open to challenge him.
If they just had the courage of their convictions and the state of our nation was paramount to them then maybe they would be able to overcome their fear, for I am sure most of them are sick of the tired old man.
32 years after independence people are still practicing open defecation.
