Breaking news: High Court rejects opposition request for results to be released
The High Court has rejected the MDC MT’s request for the Presidential results to be released. Here on the BBC:
A Zimbabwean court has rejected an opposition demand for the immediate release of the result of the presidential election.
High Court judge Tendai Uchena rejected the Movement for Democratic Change’s application to force the electoral commission to release the result.
And here on AP:
A Zimbabwean opposition lawyer says a court has rejected a demand for the immediate release of results from last month’s presidential election.
Lawyer Andrew Makoni says the High Court issued a ruling Monday dismissing the opposition petition for the results.
The electoral commission has said it was still verifying the votes.
Independent tallies indicate longtime President Robert Mugabe lost the election, but garnered enough votes to force a runoff.
Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai claims to have won the election outright.
Last week Morgan Tsvangirai said he’d be calling for a nationwide stayaway for tomorrow (15 April 2008) if the results were not released.
The ruling has only just come through but sms’s have already been flying like crazy all morning spreading word of the stayaway. It seems to be going ahead.
Quite a few employers I know are already planning not to work tomorrow and their workers are in agreement.
I will post a further update when I know more.

Thank you so much for your updates – news from within the country is what the Zimbabwean diaspora needs the most.
This news is unbelievable. How the government can continue to claim a democratic state when it is so clear that the police, army, judiciary, press etc etc are all on Mugabe’s side, is beyond me. Those “leaders” around Zimbabwe, specifically Mbeki, need to grow a backbone and stand up to this tyrant. The people of Zimbabwe have suffered for too long. Mugabe’s time is UP.

Just when we thought there would be some semblance of a democratic voting process……………
This is ludicrous! Each development brings more anger and disbelief at the chain of events (read lies!).
It must be very nice living in ZANU PF-land – you can do anything you like!!!!!
Unbelievable! What is the solution? Those of us who are writing/emailing the powers that be seem to be coming up empty-handed – what will it take?!!!
Keep strong Zimbabwe.

A strategi of non violence is the right thing to do – but I’m afraid it will only work if combined with a lot of media attention from outside. For this to happen we need brave journalists and cameramen inside Zimbabwe.
Sky News seem to be the best “western” source at the moment ( see the report at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmlqtyczKPM or at http://www.skynews.com) but Sky mostly has a UK audience. Video coverage of the assaults shown on BBC World and CNN are vital if the impact is going to spread…
The UK, the US and other Western countries already want to take the situation in Zim to the UN security council, but again our friend Mbeki opposes:
>>A spokesman for the U.S. mission to the United Nations, Benjamin Chang, made clear the United States would also press for a Security Council discussion about Zimbabwe’s election.
“We consider the ongoing crisis in Zimbabwe as a concern for the international community,” he said. “We intend to raise that concern on Wednesday.”
South Africa, which holds the rotating presidency of the 15-nation Security Council, opposes putting Zimbabwe on the meeting’s agenda, saying the issue has nothing to do with international peace and security.

With friends like this – who needs enemies?
God help Zimbabwe.
