The Mugabe regime has an ambivalent approach towards the law. But if there is one thing that worries Mugabe now more than anything, it is the lack of legitimacy that he now faces.

Although keen to claim legality, however, the interest is not in substance or values, but in the form and structure of laws. Why do such regimes insist on legality? Why do they worry about legitimacy? It is because even a thief eventually craves to be recognised as the legal and legitimate owner of the property he has stolen. It is because it has failed to honour its part of the 'social contract'and underlying values as laid down in the Constitution that the Mugabe regime is now facing a crisis of legitimacy.
Reply to this comment --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('208108','True Grit','The Mugabe regime has an ambivalent approach towards the law.
We have just said sorry to the indigineous people of Australia. It is is perceived here as a major turning point but much more clearly needs to be done. I will die before Mugabe says sorry. The children die, the children die waiting for drugs to save them which we can buy over the counter anywhere, anytime. Robert Mugabe now joins a list of men whom the world will for ever know as evil. That is his legacy.
Reply to this comment --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('207800','from Oz','We have just said sorry to the indigineous people of Australia.
It worked in SA but I think the name should reflect all of your aims. Why not call it the Truth, Justice AND RECONCILIATION Coalition.

Guys the UN are still in Tanzania over Rwanda and they have only convicted a few and the lawyers there sit in big fat houses get big fat salaries and their wheels of justice roll by slower than a snail. Whilst I commend the identification of these men and women far better to spend the money on helping the victims get over their traumas....help them to rebuild their lives with the money these guys accumulated illegally. Sue them in civil courts.......much better......
Reply to this comment --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('207727','mama','Guys the UN are still in Tanzania over Rwanda and they have only convicted a few and the lawyers there sit in big fat houses get big fat salaries and their wheels of justice roll by slower than a snail.
Fantastic news. This has to happen. It will take time, funds and organisation - for instance, to train interpreters and people to take statements, not easy from traumatised people, that can stand up to cross examination.

Something else I have long hoped for: a United Nations forensic investigation similar to the ones they led in Rwanda and former Yugoslavia, to investigate the older genocide in Matabeleland and also this fresh one that is underway. Let the bones and murdered remains of innocents like little Brighton tell their stories and then be reburied with due ceremony and honour.
Reply to this comment --- <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('207644','Sally D','Fantastic news.
