Immediate Action Required: Farmer and family currently under seige in Zimbabwe; farm workers are being violently assaulted

This is taking place right now. Please can you all call the press in your area and pass the information onto them. We believe that the family are in real danger. Include the message to the press to contact SWRadio Africa for more information. Their website has contact details.

Wayne Munroe, a farmer in Nymandlovhu (just outside Bulawayo in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe), has been under siege since early this morning. His property has been encircled by in excess of 100 “war veterans”.

He phoned the police in Nymandlovhu to inform them of the problem and was on the phone to them when 4 “war veterans” entered his office. He immediately told the member in charge that they were there and that a 303 (gun) was being pointed at his chest. He was forced to hang up.

A tussle ensued: Munroe was injured on the hand with the head of an axe blade and he sprayed the attackers with pepper spray enabling him to escape.

He was fired at 4 times, but they missed, and Munroe managed to get to the farm house where his mother and grandmother live.

The war veterans moved into the compound outside the perimeter fence and are busy right now beating the workers.

Munroe’s wife and his two children, aged 4 and 5, are holed up in their own house some 100m away.

One of the workers managed to escape the beating at the compound (which is outside the perimeter fence of both farm houses) and managed to get to Munroe.

He told Munroe that after they finished beating the workers, they were coming for the farmhouses.

Mrs Munroe (Ursula) managed to phone out that she was going to attempt getting to her husband, but has failed because more armed “war veterans” have moved in.

She is currently there now.

Senator David Coltart has repeatedly called Chief Inspector Munyira at Nymandlovhu to go and assist the Munroes.

Coltart was told by the police they would send a detail out but at 3.10pm one - ONE - police officer arrived at the gate of the farm and then left.

To add to the sinister nature of the situation, this morning the regular member in charge and various other officers were replaced at Nymandlovhu police station. This points to the fact that the police were not trusted to carry out this brutal assault.

Yesterday Munroe was warned that there had been a meeting at stops camp in Bulawayo where the decision to invade had been made.

==== For more information please contact =======

SWRadio Africa are attempting to contact the Munroes. To prevent the Munroe telephone line from being blocked up with calls at a time of crisis we are asking the press to please contact SWRadio Africa directly for information. They will be functioning as an intermediary for press enquiries.

Update:

We received information that Obert Mpofu arrived at the Munroe farm this evening with a government bus !. This happened after this story was posted up. Apparently he was yelling and shouting but no one is quite sure who he was shouting and screaming at. At this stage we aren’t sure if he was shouting about the Munroes or if, as we hope, he’d been receiving so many phone calls that he realised it would be good idea to do his MP duty and arrive at the farm and sort out the volatile situation. We are hoping the bus was there to remove all the “war veterans”.

We are very much hoping that perhaps he realised this was very public now, and that he wouldn’t be able to dodoge accountability on this crime if it got out of hand.

May we suggest, in case he forgets what a good MP should do, that you all call him and remind him of his duties and make him aware that we are all watching and we know what’s going on. Please be polite. See the comments for extra contact numbers that Miko might post there. The contact we have for Obert Mpofu is a cell number: + 263 - (0)11 - 865601.

Update: 11.52 am - 1 May

The Munroes are still under siege. We believe that most of the workers have managed to leave - some made it to a farm 4 km away and have already left there. They are too afraid to stay. We are glad to report that none of the workers appear to be seriously injured.

There is a meeting taking place with the “war veterans” near to the Munroes, but no one knows what they saying. We have heard that they are threatening to burn the Munroes out.

Obert Mpofu stayed at the farm for about 20mins ranting. We still don’t know who was taken away in the bus.

I contacted ‘The Guardian’ here and they are looking into it. I also spoke to someone from ‘The Observer’ (because I was somehow bounced to him by the system) and although they are a Sunday paper he said he’d keep an eye on it as it develops.

I have also called ‘The Times’, and ‘The Independent’ and all asked for the link to this page and said they will look into it.

Have to say, I felt really nervous making the first call - first time I’ve done this! But I am now trying to find more press contacts to help.

My family originaly came from Zimbabwe and I know the area well. My thoughts and my prayers are with all of you and this family. I hope these calls help. God bless you all.

TIP TO OTHERS, ask for the ‘Foreign Newsdesk’.

p.s. The Observer guy said he knew your site.

The few farmers are vital to stay and help the
people get all the farm land going again. Where are those people’s mentalities? I am also going to hand this news to our papers here. It is just shocking, and totally unnecessary.Dictorship is to be eradicated in Zim, never to return ever, for our children’s sake. My own son has not been able to come to see where he went to school and it is every human’s right to be able to go back to your roots. May the Lord protect those in distress and let the intruders flee for good !!!

Mike S - the news is quoting “senior government sources” as saying 47%. MT won outright, but Zanu PF want a run-off.

Mbeki is the one to blame for the violence in Zim cause he is the one leading an African delegation in denial of the crisis in Zimbabwe.. I think we now have to also work on Mbeki as well. Do you have his contacts.? The people of Zim are not armed and can only hope the UN come to their rescue but Mbeki is busy smiling advocating for more people to be killed. He does not care at all.He has costed us a lot. I believe Mugabe himself when told by some of his SADC colleagues to quit, he will certainly quit but it seems his neighbours wish to see dead bodies oile is the rural areas. I thinking Mbeki is more cruel than Mugabe himself.

How is Morgan now going to prevent Mugabe stealing the election in a run-off vote?

He can either officially accept the 47%, or reject it with different evidence. The problem is that the wider world already seem to have accepted the 47%/43% result. He can build on this momentum, stage manage the run-off to his advantage, and emerge as the successful winner for all to see. With luck (and perhaps a bodyguard for protection) he should be able to succeed. Whether the handover would prove entirely peaceful will be the ultimate test of democracy over dictatorship.

Let us bow our heads in prayer for the Munroes that they atleast emerge victorious from this crazy odeal. Take the farm if you wish, but for God’s sake spare their lives and dignity. Zimbabwean have been stripped of all their dignity, but they stand firm in their pride to continue to fight for freedom, color does not matter in this instance. God Hears All Our Prayer, just a take a minute of silence and pray for the Munroes. Thank You All, the struggle for freedom, peace and prosperity continues only through God Almighty.

As suggested on Monday some people need to go out there and use their non violence on the soldiers and militia….I dont think the emails are reaching the torture camps…..

Violence claims two lives in Masvingo

MASVINGO, April 30, 2008 (thezimbabwetimes.com) - At least two MDC
supporters were killed yesterday and scores were injured in Masvingo as the
current wave political violence spreads across the country, the police have
    said.

Zvidzai Mapurisa of Gunikuni village in Masvingo Central constituency was
murdered by suspected Zanu-PF supporters while Cathrine Mukwenje of Mawarire
Village in Mwenezi was also killed by suspected war veterans as President
Mugabe’s ruling party unleashed a violent political campaign ahead of the
    expected presidential run-off.

The police in Masvingo yesterday confirmed the death of Mapurisa and
    Mukwenje, both prominent MDC supporters.

The officer commanding Masvingo province Assistant commissioner Mhekia
Tanyanyiwa confirmed the deaths and said investigations were underway,.

“I can confirm the death of Mapurisa and Mukwenje both suspected MDC
    supporters,” said Tanyanyiwa.

“We are urging all people to report all cases of violence so that the police
can attend to them timely to avoid loss of human life.”

At least 20 people have been arrested in connection with the murders and
more arrests could be made,” he said.

About 15 people most of them who men are admitted to Morgenster Mission and
Neshuro hospitals after they were brutally assaulted by the suspected
    Zanu-PF militants.

According to police sources Mapurisa was abducted from his home on Saturday
and was subjected to beatings and later thrown into a near by dam where his
    body was found floating.

In Mwenezi Mukwenje was confronted by suspected Zanu-PF supporters and
assaulted heavily before her assailants allegedly plucked out one of her
    eyes.

She died yesterday of injuries she sustained during the assault.

MDC Masvingo provincial secretary Tongai Matutu said the marauding Zanu-PF
supporters were targeting MDC supporters whom they accused of voting for the
opposition during the March 29 harmonised elections.

“These people are targeting our supporters, mostly those residing in
    resettlement areas,” said Matutu.

Unless the so called inevitable re-run is conducted by SADC & monitored by international observers, MDC should not participate in it. If again the ZEC takes control, then we will either have to wait indefinitely for the outcome (if MDC wins) OR they will rig and announce the results in 24 hrs as usual.. Besides, the environment is not conducive for a free election. There is too much intimidation, polarised media and excessive abuse of law..

I called Obert Mpofu, the relevant MP for this district, on 3 numbers. Sokwanele, should I make the numbers public?

On his mobile phone, a woman answered the phone and would not let me speak with him, would not deny that he was there, and did not deny it was his phone. She was annoyed with these calls, said she had gotten ten calls, and didn’t want anymore calls.

I wish she had been more open as I identified myself and was unfailingly polite. The MP responsible for an area should take note and get involved in an ongoing violent incident to which police had not reacted.

There you have it: Mpfu has had a chance to bet involved and has not. He is complicit in this gross crime and may be held responsible for crimes against humanity under the chain of command doctrine, which has been proven in the Hague.

4th Chim.. I understand your sentiments, but Zanu-PF will argue that a 40 plus result is an impressive amount, and enough to fight on (politically speaking). From a purely political point of view therefore, it would be surprising for MDC not to meet the challenge a second time. also, although recently they said they would not participate in a run-off, they had originally said that they would (I believe). In any event you must agree, they must decide something positive to avert an impasse.

What we have to do is to ring him:

APOLOGISE to whomever answers, most sincerely for disturbing them and their busy boss
    and
THANK them for going to the farm to sort out the misunderstanding.

We understand that such experienced politicians would never allow violence in their areas and and we are so upset that the foreign media and foreign MPS think this is happening when he is in charge.

If we can put out the word for him that it is all cleared up now, we would be so happy.

Cool guys! I am beginning my day laughing!

Having said that, I hope everyone at the farm is OK.

I heard Mrs Munroe on SWRadioaAfrica last night. She sounded strong and there seemed to be a lot of solidarity there. I think about 20 people were crammed into her house at that point.

There are two answers I think the world should know about the government official Obert Mpofu.
First, was it just a coincidence that he was promoted soon after farmer Martin Olds’ brutal murder in April 2000, or was he in any way implicated in this murder? And second, Why, and to what extent, has he played a significant role since Olds’ murder in attempting to evict the handful of remaining white farmers from his fiefdom?

    Worrying developments in Zimbabwe
    From a Zimbabwe Citizen 11:40am

There have been some terrifying signs that the violence in Zimbabwe is intensifying over the last 24 hours. with tactical assaults on the few remaining commercial farms increasing in preparation for an election “run off” between Morgan Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe.

We understand that Wayne Munroe, a farmer in a part of Matebeleland North called Nyamandlovu, “the place of the meat of the elephant”, has been under siege since early yesterday [30th April], his property encircled by a tactical assault group of 100 Zanu PF militia.

People working for Munroe, according to one informed source, have been “savagely beaten, horribly brutalised” in the course of the quasi military operation. Munroe himself was struck with an axe on the hand and escaped a rifle wielding assailant by spraying pepper spray into his eyes.

Munroe’s wife and two children were separated from Munroe until limited police intervention allowed the family to be reunited this afternoon.

Munroe’s own constituency MP, Obert Mpofu – a slavish adherent of Robert Mugabe - has failed to take any action to halt the militia attack.

It has been an open secret since the assassination of another Matebeleland North farmer, Martin Olds in April 2000, that key lieutenants of Robert Mugabe in Zanu PF’s Politburo have been implicated heavily in the targeted killings of white farmers.

Olds was murdered in a military operation which saw police roadblocks being lifted to allow a heavily armed party of approximately 300 militia with tactical assault weapons to encircle his home.

Olds was a constituent of Obert Mpofu, as is Wayne Munroe.

Though he signally failed to intervene or even offer comment at the time of the all out assault on Olds’s homestead, there is of course no evidence to suggest that Mpofu, a former Minister of Industry and International Trade, was involved in the Olds assassination.

The controversial Minister was, however, promoted following Olds’s murder and appears to maintain his access to power by continually beating the anti-white drum.

Since the death of Martin Olds Mpofu has played a significant role in attempting to evict the handful of remaining farmers from his fiefdom.

Sent from Cape Town this evening: Sir - Thank you for doing your job & visiting the Monroe Farm.
The world is watching. Only those who love justice and peace have a future in Zimbabwe.

If 4th Chimurenga is right about him (and Chim sounds very well informed) - then the man is definitely not one of those who loves Justice!!

BTW, did anyone else see the TV footage of Jacob Zuma in North West province for a May Day celebration? Who the heck was that on stage with him - looked like the Village People…

Maybe that’s the problem with would-be President Tsvangirai. Not enough singing and dancing. MDC could do with some more musical backing - actually I’m quite serious about that. Freedom songs played a huge role in SA and have always sustained energy when there’s been a long fight for justice.

Just read the telegraph story on the siege at the Munroe’s farm. Sadly as is usual with western media, any crisis in Africa are always reduced to some ‘tribal’ component and I quote …”Mr Olds was killed eight years ago the murder was carried out by a group of Shona-speakers, who are concentrated in the east of Zimbabwe and form the bulk of the Mr Mugabe’s support”. It saddens me somehow that any crisis in Africa is always given some tribal conotation. None of the people perpetrating these violent acts are doing this on behalf of any tribe. Zimbabweans irrespective of their tribe…which matters very litle to most of us anyway hate Mugabe and want him gone.

It seems that the police are in support of this intimidation as they have tried to arrest my brother Wayne for inciting violence.
There are actually 7 of my family in the farm house along with several of the workers who have lost all of their possessions to the looters. We can only hope for a peaceful end to this situation and maybe even justice for the farm workers who have lost everything.

I agree with him; I think it’s not a bad idea at all that all the people who work with and for Minister Mpofu know that he is being monitored from all over the world. So may I suggest you send emails to those addresses as well (in the database).

    You guys are all great!

    Hope

Imagine being OM and getting all these calls - he must have a really thick skin or no imagination at all.

Keep it up guys! I think some messages with a little Shona and Ndebele in them would be very good too. It is too easy to dismiss anything in English as those crazy white imperialists.

4th Chim - why not give us a draft? A little local knowledge too so that he feels that he is being watched? eeehhh !! that feeling you get in the dark when you don’t know who is there …. I am being naughty now! Anyway lets have fun while we are working so hard.

Hi Neil.. We will continue praying for your family and others suffering in many other unseen atrocities. I have so much faith there are many cases like yours in Zimbabwean rural areas…
    @ Berth..
I agree with you 101% about the divisive reporting by western media in African issues. Such reports are TOTALLY unacceptable and misinformed. Although the foreign media must be hailed for unbiased reporting, they should research facts before just writing some stories which have the wrong implications especially on tribal grounds.

I happen to be a very good linguist especially in Ndebele, Shona and Kalanga.. You can draft one and i translate for you. Obert Mpofu understands both Kalanga & Ndebele. I know him personally.. NOT THAT I AM AS CRUEL AS HE IS?

Ok guys, what shall we say to Obert Mpofu (and his staff who are more likely to read the email)?

We want to make them feel that it would be very wise to get very inefficient!

What will make them lose things, forget things, pass information to internet sites?

Any ideas?? :-) Is that a smile? Someone under the age of 25, please tell me how to type a smile!

I typed a smile. Cxl the last request! Just what to say to OM that will make his staff jittery - not scared because no one things straight when they are scared.

Just thinking that there are little things they can do!

    Hi Neil,
my thoughts are with you and your family every minute.

    to the others:
Anybody who knows a journalist in Germany who could go for the press conference of the Munich Company Giesecke & Devrient and ask some tough questions about printing the money for Mugabe. I read they will hold a press conference to report about their last period of profit making. It’s a chance to get a statement or something else. I think it will be on May 6. But only journalists are allowed to come.
Maybe someone can help. Some of news media here in Germany already reported about G & D in connection with the money printing but i didn’t here some further statements. Did anyone of you get some answers in connection with your mails and letters?

MP Obert Mpofu is a silent assassin. Believe it or not, anything labelled ZANU PF is cruel. These are signs of the last kick of a dying horse. They (ZANU PF) want to make sure they leave office with enough loot to survive in a democratic Zimbabwe. Please note that non of ZANU members can really account for their wealth without facing jail. I am totally against reconciling with these ZANU thugs in the event of new leadership. They need to face the full wrath of the law. They should languish in prisons. IN the meantime, may well wishers donate some money to built a new maximum proson in Zimbabwe. An willing donors can contact me on this forum.

Just to say thank you to everyone who supported our call.

Anyone who thinks the work we do here doesn’t matter needs to be aware that it really does!

We received emails today from two press sources thanking us for the alert on the Munroe story, which is only being written about now in some countries and I suspect it may be down to your efforts here.

Thank you, for being so responsive!

I have read that the US Ambassador to Zimbabwe is recording details re incidents of violence. Are they aware of Obert Mpofu’s recent activities?

Secondly, this… I just have to refrain from any comment about this, judge for yourselves:

    Mbeki to probe Zimbabwe violence…

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/05/03/2234311.htm?section=justin

South Africa President Thabo Mbeki has told religious leaders in Pretoria that he will send a mission to investigate political violence in Zimbabwe, as Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe files to contest election results.

“[Mr Mbeki] assured us that he would do everything to ensure that a second round of the run-off election happens in an atmosphere of peace,” Nyansako Ni-Nku, head of the All-Africa Conference of Churches, was quoted as saying.

“In order to achieve that, the President said that right away they will dispatch a team to check every allegation of violence,” he said.’

Mbeki wont investigate anything. He will be told what to say by Mugabe. MBEKI WILL NEVER NEVER EVER admit that Mugabe is killing his own people.

The latest update is Wayne myself and kids fled the farm after police tried to apprehend Wayne on allegations of assault. he is currently travelling with his lawyer to Nyamandhlovu to face his charges. We have been in the local newspaper for the last 3 days. It was reported that he was arrested on Sunday, at large on Monday and today he has handed himself in. NOT A WORD has been mentioned about the war vets shooting at him!

All ffingers crossed we will continue to update.

Thanks again for all your support,

Just an update from today. Wayne was arrested this afternoon for ” assault with pepper spray” and is been held in Nyamandlovu Police Station. He is hopefully going to court in Tsholotsho tommorrow with his lawyer, they can only hold him for 48 hours. We can only hope that the police refrain from their usual tricks and keep to the rule of law.

I have managed to acquire the phone number of the police station in Nyamandlovu it is +263 87 304 and 306   the member in charge goes by the name of Moyo and I am sure he needs reminding about his duties as a police officer. I think the thing to get accross to these people is that they WILL be held accountable for their actions against human rights.
