Webster Shamu, the Minister of (Dis)Information, would like to take us back to an ancient time of limited communications and Rhodesian styled censorship, as evidenced by his recent comments that social networks and the internet need to be regulated.
People from all walks of life are in an uproar over the Minister’s statements that social media and the internet are retrogressive and should be regulated.
The minister said this during a meeting with Deputy Minister of the State Counsel Information Office of China, Mr Qian Xiaoqian, who is in the country for a familiarisation visit.
“However, it is also important to note that if not wisely utilised and appropriately regulated, these platforms can be a cause of strife in society.
“The so-called citizen journalism facet of the new media means everyone has the potential to disseminate information that is not sometimes inaccurate or undesirable, information which may indeed be in total disregard of the national interest and lead to uncalled for internal strife in a country,” said Minister Shamu.
Shamu has further been quoted in the media saying that
“Although social networking sites have significantly contributed to the way people communicate, the need for a regulatory framework cannot be overemphasised … Family values are under threat from social media.”
One wonders how ZANU PF would want Zimbabweans to communicate in the 21st century when the rest of the free thinking world are global villagers.
ZANU PF is simply afraid….
Let’s face it, ZANU PF has failed to improve ZBC, with its system stuck in analogue and still using radio and television equipment left by the Rhodesian government.
Zimbabweans are on the opinion that if ZANU PF does attempt to control the internet it will be with the help of their Chinese friends, a nation that has managed to control the follow of information in their country. But will ZANU PF be able to manage that with their limited ability? Just have a look at their website and you will see that this political party cannot even use their website for their own benefit, the last update as I’m writing was on the 30th October 2012. Compare this to other political parties who run updates on their website daily, or tweet it as it happens.
Mr Shamu my message to you is get with the picture, you need to understand that social media has gone viral because it is based on the fact that people have a natural need to communicate with fellow beings, in preference to distant rulers (tyrants).
These are the facts, and you should rather use social networking to promote peace and transparency than attempt to control our nation…
